Taking a powder

Standard-Examiner -

Ogden Valley's ski resorts will soon close their doors on a banner ski season, officials report.

Powder Mountain Ski Resort had an "excellent" season due to a bumper crop of snow when other areas of the United States and foreign countries were lacking, said Mark Paulsen, marketing and public relations director.

"Utah was blessed with really good snow," Paulsen said. "I think every ski resort in the state has done better than previous years, and I think Ogden Valley has done better than other parts of the state. I hope we have another year like this year."

Powder Mountain Ski Resort will close Sunday, Snowbasin Ski Resort will close April 17. Nordic Valley Ski Resort has already closed.

Denzel Rowland, general manager of Snowbasin Ski Resort, estimated there were 200,000 visitors to his resort this year, a 15 percent to 17 percent increase from the year before.

"In the springtime it slows down some, but business has been really strong, stronger than usual in the spring," Rowland said. "We had good snow most of the season and a lot of snow here at the end of the season."

Many skiers were from out of state, he said, perhaps because the northwestern states didn't get as much snow as usual.

"Colorado probably is getting a little bit overbooked, so people are finding Utah as a place to go," Rowland said.

The local resorts still have plenty of snow. More than 6 feet fell in the last couple of weeks, Rowland said, and at least 6 inches fell on Monday.

We agree, it has been a great year - just take a look at the Powder Journal
